About Evan Powell

Photography has been a passion of mine since 1978 when I first saw the work of Ansel Adams and the great portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh in San Francisco. With these great masters of black and white as inspiration, I dedicated myself exclusively to B/W for the first 30 years of my photographic career. But with the conversions of film-based to digital photography I began to experiment with color about 15 years ago. Today I love both mediums, so the collections on this site present an array of both color and B/W.

My original passion was for B/W landscape photography, but over the years I have come to point my cameras at virtually anything from the stunning graffiti art in Paris to the intricate Cypress tree root detail of the Ghost Trees of Pescadero Point (a mile west of Pebble Beach in California). The natural color saturation in these Cypress Root images has been amplified to reveal the extraordinary spectrum of color that is present in the native roots. This simple process generates surprisingly rich, vibrant, abstract images that are unlike anything I have ever seen. This was a fascinating discovery for me. As hard as it may be to believe, the photographs in the Cypress Root portfolio are all straight, natural photographs with nothing but the native color saturation enhanced. I hope you will enjoy these and the other photographs on this site.
